enke Alumni Leading Through Diplomacy: ALAMAU – African Leadership Academy Model Africa Union

Our Alumni Network has a wealth of skilled, passionate and connected young people and they use this platform to share opportunities, engage and advance the work they began within the enke programs. As such, drawing from our network, the enke Trailblazer alumni had the honour of being selected as delegates to participate in the ALAMAU (African Leadership Academy Model Africa Union) 2023 conference.

Through the generosity of the African Leadership Academy which sponsored the 5 enke Alumni to participate in the conference. The enke Alumni who applied and were selected for this opportunity were: Amari Simora (Trailblazer 2017), Blessing Gugu Green (Trailblazer 2019), Kgolaganyo Modise (Trailblazer 2020), Kutlwano Mokubetsi (Trailblazer 2018), and Neo Cholo (Trailblazer 2021).

The ALAMAU conferences are designed to bring together youth who are between the ages of 14 and 19 from all over the African continent and the world to engage in various topics relating to political issues, and demonstrate their leadership skills, this includes writing resolution papers. ALAMAU simulates the African Union, therefore in the conference sessions, young leaders had an opportunity to better understand the inner workings of the African Union as they practice international diplomacy by assuming the roles of African leaders.

The 2023 conference was not only a celebration of the first gathering since Covid-19, but also a commemoration of 10 years of ALAMAU’s consistent work to equip young leaders from Africa and across the world with critical thinking, problem-solving, research and diplomacy skills. Over this decade, the conferences have connected more than 1300 young leaders who represented 58 countries across the continent and the world.

These young leaders from high schools around the world had a 5-day experience to brainstorm, resolve and robustly engage in some of the most difficult and recurring issues on the continent. They also attended committee sessions, keynote presentations by African Union officials and foreign policy experts, a diplomatic roundtable, educational tours to historic sites, and a celebration of cultural diversity through the cultural night and gala dinner.

The conference theme was “An Inclusive Africa: A Future For All”. It was truly a remarkable experience and lived up to the theme which sought to stimulate discussions and spark debates on a wide range of topics pertaining to inclusivity in various sectors of development. Additionally, the theme explored how futuristic the African continent is if we are not inclusive about marginalised topics.

Congratulations once again to Neo, Kutlwano, Amari, Kgolaganyo and Blessing, we hope that they had a great time engaging with fellow attendees while flying the enke flag high.
