The Ignite Ventures Business Generator Program offers a structured 12-month pathway for young entrepreneurs to launch and scale their business ideas. Tailored to empower youth with the skills, resources, and networks needed for success, this program combines hands-on training with financial support and expert mentorship.

Our Solution: A Curated Program for Pre-Seed Entrepreneurs enke has developed a specialized program tailored to assist pre-seed entrepreneurs in overcoming significant barriers to establish Livelihood Sustaining Small Businesses (LSSBs). This initiative not only provides startups with the necessary tools and resources but also connects them to vital networks and funding opportunities, facilitating their long-term growth and success.

Sustainability and Impact Creating Change Through Entrepreneurship

This immersive program is dedicated to nurturing aspiring business owners aged 18 to 35 from the enke: Alumni Network, helping them develop their ventures into Livelihood Sustaining Small Businesses. Through a comprehensive suite of resources including bootcamps, training workshops, mentorship, and networking opportunities, this program empowers enke alumni to transform their entrepreneurial visions into thriving enterprises.

Amidst the challenges of limited traditional employment opportunities, enke: Ignite Ventures is a crucial platform for young innovators to harness their skills in creativity, problem-solving, and communication, driving meaningful impact in their lives and communities.

Program Structure

The enke Ignite Ventures Business Generator Program offers a structured 12-month pathway for enke alumni to launch and scale their business ideas or existing business. Tailored to empower youth with the skills, resources, and networks needed for success, this program combines hands-on training with financial support and expert mentorship.

  • Entrepreneurship Acceleration Bootcamp: A five-day accelerated workshop is run by SocioNext, focusing on social innovation, entrepreneurship skills, and rapid prototyping using Design Thinking and Lean Start-up methodologies. The SocioNext approach is accredited by Rhodes Business School.
  • Business Building Phase (BBP): Participants will receive mentorship from a Venture Builder, attend fortnightly half-day entrepreneurial training sessions, and refine their business model and value proposition. They will benefit from up to R4,500 monthly stipend for six months to cover living expenses, allowing them to focus fully on their business.
  • Business Launch Phase (BLP): Participants will engage in monthly Business Operations Training workshops while launching their businesses. They will work with a Value Creation Manager (VCM) for guidance, connections, and support. Additionally, they will receive up to R35,000 in start-up capital for market-testing and launching.
  • Peer Connect & Networking: We will hold Quarterly Peer Connect Sessions to build social capital through the enke ecosystem. These sessions will engage external stakeholders, enabling participants to network with successful entrepreneurs, explore new markets, and pitch for funding opportunities.

 

Participant Selection

The program selects young entrepreneurs aged 18 to 35 who are ready to commit to a year-long incubator program. Selection is based on the viability and potential impact of businesses and/or business ideas intended for implementation in Gauteng, where applicants must also reside. In its pilot year of 2024, the Ignite Ventures Business Generator received nearly 100 applications.

Support and Investment 

The value of training and support offered to each entrepreneur amounts to R200,000, including access to a Venture Builder and Value Creation Manager, stipend support for the first six (6) months and R35,000 in startup capital. We believe in investing in our entrepreneurs, providing not just financial support but a holistic ecosystem designed for success.

Invitation to Invest in the Ignite Ventures Business Generator Program

We invite impact investors and other social investment organizations to co-finance our Ignite Ventures Business Generator, a key program designed to nurture resilient youth-led businesses. These enterprises are poised to transform local economies and tackle unemployment. This co-financing opportunity not only addresses a significant social issue but also offers you the chance to participate in a project with both social impact and economic returns.

  • Current Funding Status: E-Squared Investments has already contributed 70% of the project’s budget for 2024-2026.
  • Investment Opportunities: We are seeking investments ranging from R50,000 to R2 million. We offer flexible options, including annual or multi-year commitments, to accommodate different investor capacities and preferences. Additionally, we can co-create to build implementation aligned to a specific industry or sector.

 

Why the enke: Business Generator?

Starting a business is fraught with challenges, especially for young entrepreneurs in township areas who face a unique set of barriers. These include:

  • Resource Accessibility: Lack of essential services like reliable electricity and internet connectivity.
  • Regulatory Hurdles: Complex bureaucracies that daunt those unfamiliar with the nuances of business regulations.
  • Cultural and Social Barriers: Prevailing norms and biases that hinder particularly women and marginalized groups.
  • Financial Constraints: Limited access to traditional financing and a low awareness of alternative sources.
  • Mentorship and Networking: Scarce business networks and mentors for essential guidance.
  • Market Access and Visibility: Geographical isolation that limits exposure to larger markets.

While there are several initiatives aimed at supporting young entrepreneurs and township communities, the scope of these challenges is vast and supporting multiple interventions is crucial to see a meaningful shift.

 

Partnership with E-Squared

We are proud to have partnered with E-Squared Investments to bring the Ignite Ventures Business Generator to life. This work builds on an earlier investment from E-Squared (2018-2021), through which we developed and expanded the enke: Catalyst Program reaching 460 youth NEETs. From this experience, we identified the need for a specialised follow-on program for our Alumni entrepreneurs.

E-Squared is a South African Impact Investor that provides funding and end-to-end business support to high-growth businesses, early-stage founders and social enterprises that are focused on creating entrepreneurial and income earning opportunities for youth in South Africa.

3-Year Impact Goals:
