Pushin’ Progress – Activating Youth in Northern Cape & Eastern Cape

Pushin’ Progress in Northern Cape & Eastern Cape

Thembisa Jali is part of the Pushin’ Progress Trailblazer Class of 2022 in Britstown, Northern Cape.

Pushin’ Progress is a movement and holistic development initiative that engages young people to achieve positive outcomes in their lives and communities.

The initiative is geared to support young people’s personal development to be able to transition into establishing their own livelihoods, employment, or educational opportunities and contribute to social and economic development in their communities. Pushin’ Progress works with young people in secondary schools and young people who are not in any employment, education, or training (NEET). Pushin’ Progress is made possible by the Sibona Ilanga Trust, Amandla Omoya Trust, and Letsatsi Borutho Trust.

  • The Sibona Ilanga Trust (SIT) is a Community Trust situated in the Area of De Aar, in the Northern Cape. The Trust is associated with the De Aar Solar Power plant. The Trust has, out of its research conducted in 2016/17; identified focus areas to support ongoing Socio-Economic Development in the area. The partnership is forged with community-based organizations and small enterprises that operate in the areas. The focus area covers a 50km radius from the De Aar Solar Power plant, including De Aar, Hanover, Phillipstown and Britstown.

  • The Amandla Omoya Trust is a community trust situated in the area of Jeffreys Bay, Eastern Cape. The Trust is associated with the Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm. Its aim is to boost social and economic development in disadvantaged communities within a 50 km radius from the Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm. The Trust supports local community development initiatives through grantmaking and operational programmes with communities within the radius. The focus area covers a 50km radius from the Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm, including Jeffreys Bay, Humansdorp, Thornhill, Lourie, Hankey, Weston and Patensie.

  • The Letsatsi Borutho Trust is a Community Trust situated in the area of Kimberley, in the Northern Cape. The Trust is associated with Droogfontein Solar Power. Its aim is to boost social and economic development in disadvantaged communities within a 50 km radius from the Droogfontein Solar Power plant. The Trust supports local community development initiatives through grantmaking and operational programmes with communities within the radius.

In 2020, enke: Make Your Mark was commissioned as the primary implementor of Pushin’ Progress initiative by the Sibona Ilanga Trust. And, in 2022, enke was successful in our bid to extend Pushin’ Progress in the communities supported by the Amandla Omoya Trust and Letsatsi Borutho Trust.

Through this partnership, Pushin’ Progress incorporates the implementation of the following enke-designed interventions over 3 years:

  • The enke: Trailblazer Program – a youth social action and leadership development program that is targeted at grades 10 and 11. The Program incubates youth social impact projects over 9 months during which they address community issues they feel passionate about, while building life-long leadership and entrepreneurial skills.
  • The enke: Catalyst Program – brings young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEET) out of the margins and into the system. This program actively engages youth NEETs by using a model that blends social good and business for them to uplift themselves and their communities. In the program a combination of residential and non-residential training is applied interspersed with periods of practical skills application.
  • Community Partners Initiative – this equips community-based organisations and individuals interested in effective youth development with training, support and resources to implement the enke: Make Your Mark model and approach.

We have been energised by the long-term approach and innovation that is encouraged in the partnerships with the Trusts. As enke, we look forward to the next 3+ years of Pushin’ Progress with our partners.
