Trailblazer+ Leader: Ahlumile Marali

Institution: Lungiso Public High School

S/CAP: Operation Clean Our School

Ahlumile Marali, a 15-year-old from Humansdorp, a small town near Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), is a Grade 10 member of the Representative Council of Learners (RCL) at Lungiso Public High School.

Ahlumile joined the Trailblazer+ (Plus) Program when it launched on 20 July 2022 and has been an active participant since.

“When I joined the programme, I had a lot of hopes regarding what I wanted to get out of the programme as an individual, but most importantly, I wanted to learn new skills that I could use to tackle any obstacle or challenge I may encounter now or even later in my life. The skills I have learned since I joined the trailblazer + programme through enke include good communication and leadership skills with people, especially because I am the School Action Project’s group leader. I learned that a leader should listen to other people’s opinions and suggestions. I also learned (through the iceberg theory) that I should not make assumptions about other people because I do not know them well and what they may be going through privately. Lastly, I should also not be judgmental of circumstances I have no idea about”.

Ahlumile and his club members’ School Action Project (SAP) is called “Operation Clean Our School”. The objective of their SAP is to keep their school as clean and hygienic as possible because they spend most of their hours on the school premises, thus would benefit everyone.

The SAP takes place within the school premises. They borrow equipment from the school caretaker and assist the cleaning workers, and they focus on various areas such as the school field, toilets, reception, classrooms, the staff room, etc. The club stated that what motivated them to start this SAP as a group was the interest they shared when they did the World Café activity/exercise and narrowed down the most problematic issues in their communities and schools.

“Our similar interest developed into a shared passion we want to see through. We are currently brainstorming a garden idea that we all find very exciting because this will help towards the school’s feeding scheme programme”.

The SAP started at the end of September, and they have continued cleaning the school since. The club says they have huge plans for the SAP and hope that other people and future participants also see the good in what they do as a Trailblazer+ Club.
