S/CAP: Junior Educators
Meet Anele Matinyane, a student at Lungiso Public High School in Humansdorp. Anele had an interest in developing his leadership and public speaking skills, which led him to join the enke Trailblazer+ program in 2023. Since joining the program, Anele says he has learned valuable skills such as working in a team, managing emotions, and not taking things personally. These skills are particularly important when working in group settings, where disagreements and conflicts may arise.
During the program, Anele and his peers identified an issue with low pass rates in their school, which they found could affect their opportunities after leaving school. Together, they developed a school action project called the “Junior Educators,” a ‘club that provides tutoring classes to students in lower grades to help improve academic averages.
“Our vision is to help improve the marks of learners that are struggling in their different subjects, we also help them with study skills, which could be very helpful for them even in future. Our SAP is inspired by the low pass rate of learners in the school. We believe that this low pass rate is caused by the shortage of teachers. We are hoping that creating a programme like this will bridge that gap and bring back the school’s dignity.”
As Junior Educators, their main goal is to raise the standard of Lungiso Public High School by promoting their tutoring help to students in need. They hope that their program can grow, and more students can participate and benefit from it.
Anele also mentions that interacting with his peers, school and team members has helped him improve his public speaking skills by learning different strategies on how to approach different people and audiences.
“Personally, I feel so grateful to be part of the Trailblazer programme, it has equipped and continues to equip me with the necessary skills and tools that I need to make my school a better place and it has made me a better person. I am now able to be a person that contributes and makes a difference in the lives of learners at Lungiso High School.”
Anele and the Junior Educators are great examples that young people can realise their own value and mobilise for meaningful change. The enke Trailblazer+ program helps guide youth to channel their passion and entrepreneurial spirit while developing their skills.
