Institution: Ntsose Secondary School, Limpopo

S/CAP: Operation Address Discipline Issues

In a small village nestled in Bochum, Limpopo, called Kromhoek, a remarkable group of learners from Ntsose Secondary School decided to act and address a pressing issue in their school – discipline. These young change-makers are the heart and soul of the JIKA Club, a trailblazing initiative aimed at transforming the very fabric of their school community. In this blog, we’ll introduce you to the JIKA Club and their inspiring journey towards instilling discipline and change in their school.

The JIKA Club was started on the 8th of October 2022, driven by a shared vision to combat the detrimental effects of indiscipline among their peers. “JIKA” is a slang word that aptly translates to “change” or “transform” – a fitting name for a group determined to make a difference. These young trailblazers recognized that discipline issues were undermining the educational environment at Ntsose Secondary School, and they were eager to turn things around.

The JIKA group set out with a comprehensive plan to promote discipline among their schoolmates. Their core objectives included ensuring that students arrived at school early or on time, wore proper school uniforms, and adhered to schedules, particularly during lunch hours. To achieve these goals, the JIKA Club took a proactive approach:

Members of JIKA stationed themselves near the school gates in the morning. Their mission was to observe students’ adherence to the school uniform policy and encourage their peers to head to class promptly if they were lagging. During lunch hours, JIKA members continued their vigilant presence, reminding their fellow students to return to their classes on time. They understood the value of effective time management and wanted their peers to embrace it as well. JIKA went above and beyond by motivating their fellow students to attend extra lessons at school. They recognized that discipline extended beyond punctuality and uniforms; it was also about commitment to learning.

The JIKA Club firmly believes that their program is a catalyst for helping other learners understand the importance of discipline, not only within the school but also in the wider community. They hold a fundamental belief that education and discipline go hand in hand; one cannot thrive without the other.

The JIKA Club’s ambitions stretch beyond their current efforts. They hope to inspire more learners to join their club in the coming years, envisioning a future where their program becomes a year-to-year tradition. Their goal is to establish a sustainable system within their school and neighbouring institutions that champions discipline, ultimately making the educational experience better for all.

The JIKA Club is a shining example of how young individuals can initiate meaningful change within their community. Their dedication to fostering discipline and a culture of responsibility at Ntsose Secondary School is truly commendable. As we celebrate the JIKA Club’s journey and accomplishments, let us remember that change begins with a single step, and these young trailblazers have taken that step with unwavering determination. With their inspiring example, we can all learn that change is possible, no matter where you are or how big the challenge may seem. The JIKA Club is proof that even in the smallest of villages, great transformations can occur when young minds come together with a shared purpose: to change, to transform, and to make a difference.
