#Youth4ServiceImpact – Samson Zigana perseveres amidst stipend challenges

Name and Surname:  Samson Zigana
Independent Volunteer Participants
Area of Service: Evaton West Ext 3

Samson Zigana is a 27 year old enke:Youth 4 Service Program participant who resides in Evaton West Ext 3.

He says that he chose to become part of enke: Y4S Program because of the kind of opportunity it offered the Youth of South Africa, giving the Youth a platform to become part of the Community while earning a living for themselves. He believes that the program is what is needed in South Africa communities in these difficult times the youth of our country are facing, and has played a vital role.

“One of the changes I saw in myself as a result of this program was the patience to continue volunteering in my community despite the stipend challenges that we had during the Program. I had a lot of patience that I didn’t know I had in me. I gained strong communication skills engaging with community members from time to time. I had the opportunity to Lead a group of people along the way. My Goals are to be employed permanently according to the qualifications I possess and hopefully to help my community youth members especially those out of High School with Skills development for better future employment.

The impact that I saw in my community that the program brought is Youth meet gatherings that are happening because of this program. Young people were able to meet and ask about the program and how to be part of it. The interest it brought to my community was part of the impact it achieved.

The first Challenge as an independent volunteer was to find a place to start my own program, for I was providing education lessons in Mathematics and Physical Sciences to High school learners, so I needed to find a place to work from… As time goes by I ended up using the ECD Centre and Service Point Building in my community and it was a perfect place for the program I was running. The second Challenge was the Stipend payment. It became a challenge because I was used to getting something by the end of the month”.

Lastly, my one key Message to Young people is this : By changing nothing, nothing changes.
