Kimberley Technical High School Tackles Homophobia with “Safely LGBTQI+” School Action Project

Meet Oregolele, a grade 11 student at Kimberley Technical High School, is leading the charge to create a more inclusive environment for everyone. Along with his 18 fellow Trailblazer club members, Oregolele is implementing a project called “Safely LGBTQI+.”

This initiative aims to raise awareness about the LGBTQI+ community and combat homophobia and discrimination within the school and greater Kimberley community.

The Trailblazers believe this project is crucial because their school has students who identify as LGBTQI+. Their goal is to make these students feel accepted and valued members of the “Tekkie” community – the affectionate nickname used by Kimberley Technical High School students.

As Oregolele puts it, “No learner can perform at their best in a space where they are not accepted.”

Trailblazer Plus Empowers Student Leadership

Oregolele’s participation in the Trailblazer Plus program, along with his role as an RCL (Representative Council of Learners) member, has been instrumental in his leadership development. The program has equipped him with the skills to create a more welcoming and appreciative environment that celebrates everyone’s unique identity.

The Trailblazer Plus program also provided valuable guidance in structuring the “Safely LGBTQI+” project and defining the impact the club hopes to achieve.

Building an Inclusive School Community

Oregolele acknowledges the school’s significant support in implementing their project and fostering a more inclusive environment. While they may encounter some skepticism from other students, the Trailblazers remain optimistic. They understand that change takes time, and they’re committed to putting in the hard work and resilience necessary to make a difference.

This project by the Kimberley Technical High School Trailblazers is an inspiring example of student leadership working towards a more equitable and inclusive learning environment.
